Methodology

I am Molly Whitehead, a 22-year-old British-American designer utilizing ceramic and wood as my chosen mediums. Growing up on a 150 year old dairy farm in upstate New York stimulation from organic natural materials indigenous to country life combined with the diverse multiculturalism of New York city life, generated a uniquely rich tapestry of influences. My design aesthetic is shaped by tactile explorations in water, dirt, wood, twine, clay, and playing with light, form and function. A philosophical interest in the art of wabi sabi and curvilinear form can also be found in my work. Experiencing the cultural melting pot of NewYork as well as my good fortune of traveling through many countries when I was so young, introduced me to the power of self expression, a love of design and the importance of a strong sense of style. Early on, photography was my portal to the arts, helping me document life while exploring i.e.: products in New York’s Chinatown, finding neighborhood graffiti, juxtapositions of color, demographics, culture and local crafts.

Above all, my interest in continuing as a designer is rooted in the satisfaction of having a clearly individualistic expression that is tangible  -a product that can be touched  -that was created from my life story.
